Gran Paradiso
7 days - level 2/3
In amongst the stunning scenery and complete tranquillity of Gran Paradiso National Park, this trip allows you to get to know its more remote slopes and valleys. The second day includes instruction on more advanced ski-mountaineering techniques which will be used in the later part of the trip.
- Day 1 - From Cogne we ascend to Rifugio Quintino Sella (2584m). Here beautiful larch forests give way to open slopes where Chamois and Ibex can often be spotted. 0m 1030m
- Day 2 - Ascent to Col Reyes Noires (3441m) and return to Rifugio Quintino Sella. This short acclamatisation day is very rewarding, with a very good descent from the col. Today you will learn about the use of crampons, ice axes and avalanche safety equipment, aswell as developing your ascent techniques. 857m 857m
- Day 3 - The ascent of Gran Serra (3552m) is a fantastic day, which includes a short technical section requiring the use of a rope. We then descend beautiful slopes to the valley of Gran Neyron and Rifugio Chabod (2750m). 800m 1000m
- Day 4 - Today we summit the highest mountain of the range, Gran Paradiso (4061m), via the Aveciau glacier. The ascent is never too steep and has fantastic views on the north face of the mountain. The final few metres involve some easy scrambling to reach the top. Descent to Rifugio Viottorio Emanuel across wide open slopes. 1330m 1311m
- Day 5 - Another great day in the wildest and least frequented part of the National Park. Ascent of Tresenta (3609m), Colle Gran Paradiso (3345m) and Colle dei Becchi (2990m) before reaching Rifugio Pontese (2200m). Today there are some beautiful descents alternating between brief steep sections and easier slopes. 1770m 1264m
- Day 6 - An ascent to Col Monte Nero (3278m) gives you the chance to get to know this wild and beautiful area. Excellent descent back to Rifugio Pontese. 1078m 1078m
- Day 7 - Ascent to Colle Teleccio (3304m), which passes beneath several impressive granite walls. This section requires the use of crampons as the slope is south facing and the snow very compact. A beautiful descent down the Teleccio glacier and into the valley of Valleile takes us back to the village of Cogne. 1700m 1100m
