Valli di Lanzo to Gran Paradiso

8 days, level 4

This alpinistic trek takes us to the summit of Ciamarella; which at 3676m is the most important peak in the Lanzo area; and Gran Paradiso (4061m). Our journey starts in the wild, isolated valleys of Lanzo and finishes in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. This is Italy’s oldest National Park and is well known for its abundant wildlife and pristine alpine setting. No previous alpine experience is necessary but a good level of fitness is required.

  • Day 1: We depart from the valley of Arnas and take a good path to Peraciaval where we spend the night in a rifugio. 3hrs.
  • Day 2: This day includes one of the areas finest walks, which follows a high level traverse to Colle Altare (2901m) and Collarin d’Arnas (2851m). From here we descend to Rifugio Cirie. 3hrs.
  • Day 3: A rewarding day which takes us across Pian Gias to the Ciamarella glacier and the summit of Ciamarella (3676m). Breathtaking views from the top across the Maritime Alps to the south onto Monte Bianco to the north. Overnight in Rifugio Cirie. 7hrs.
  • Day 4: A wonderful section of the trip in the beautiful Vallone Sea. From the rifugio we skirt round the base of Ciamarella’s imposing south face and ascend to Passo del Ghicet di Sea at 2750m. A short descent finally brings us to the small village of Forno Alpi Graie. 5hrs.
  • Day 5: Today we walk through some very wild and beautiful valleys to reach Colle della Piccola (2705m). From here there are spectacular views onto the Gran Paradiso massif. An enjoyable descent brings us to lake Ceresole in Gran Paradiso National Park. 7hrs.
  • Day 6: Our ascend to Pont Valsavarenche via the Nivolet lakes brings us insight of our final objective; Gran Paradiso.
  • Day 7: A short but spectacular section on a good path takes us to the historic Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II; departure point for Gran Paradiso since the first ascent in 1860.
  • Day 8: A wonderful climax after seven days trekking, we summit Gran Paradiso (4061m). Breathtaking views all the way to the top. A long final descent to the valley floor and the final night’s accommodation.
