Biella Light
5 days – level 1+/2-
A series of beautiful walks to discover the pre-alps of Piemonte. Based in the town of Biella, we explore a different area everyday; from forests to alpine meadows, traditional mountain villages to breathtaking views across the alps. Combined with home-cooked Italian food, a visit to Biella old town centre and the late-spring floral displays of Burcina Botanical Park, your experience will be complete.
- Day 1 - Departure from Santuario Oropa along a good path through beautiful deciduous woodland. We then ascend alpine pastures to gain Monte Becco (1730). A short descent bring us to Colle della Colma and back to our starting point. Approximately 5hrs round trip. We then visit the grandiose 17th Century Sanctuary of Oropa.
- Day 2 - Today we explore the peaceful Valle Sessera. This is a great walk which gradually gains altitude through forests and across mountain streams before a panoramic traverse to Rifugio Monte Barone (1610m). Fabulous views across the surrounding mountains. Here we stop for lunch; those with more stamina can head for the top(2044m)! Approximately 6hrs round trip.
- Day 3 - A semi rest-day. In the morning we take a walk through the superb Botanical Park of Burcina. This park is well know in Piemonte for its stunning display of colour in the spring and early summer, when azzalea, rhododendrons and a multitude of other plants are in flower.
- Day 4 - Today we visit Valle Cervo with its traditional mountain villages and archituecture. The footpath we ascend is the old trade route between Piemonte and the neighbouring valley of Gressoney. We reach Lago della Vecchia, a beautiful alpine lake in rugged surroundings, just in time for lunch. Approximately 6hrs round trip.
- Day 5 - Free day to explore the town of Biella. Why not visit the Medieval town centre with its examples of Roman and Baroque churches, cloisters and bell tower.
