Climbing in Gran Paradiso

7 days– levels 2-3

Fabulous climbing in a stunning location. When hot summer days permit climbing at higher elevations, perfect granite walls perched high in remote hanging valleys and amongst glaciers await us. Gran Paradiso National Park offers long and exhilarating mountain routes to those prepared to make the effort to reach them.

  • Day 1 - There is a short 40minute walk to Refugio Pontese (2200m), which will be our base for most of the week. This cosy welcoming refuge, run by local Italians, serves home cooked food everyday and is strategically placed for some of the best high mountain routes in the National Park.
  • Day 2 - A strenuous three hour walk-in will take you to 3360m and the base of the first objective: the awe-inspiring granite face of Becco dalla Tribulazione, which perched in one of the most beautiful group of mountains in this part of the Alps, is in a stunning high mountain setting with superb views.
  • Day 3 - Rest day at Refugio Pontese. Relax and enjoy the view or go for a walk to one of the near-by cols to see what lies beyond. This park is well known for the abundance of its wildlife, so it is not uncommon to spot ibex and marmots amongst the boulders and meadows, or golden eagles passing overhead.
  • Day 4 - Today a slightly shorter 2hr walk-in will bring you to Becco di Valsoera (3369m), which is home to some of the best routes in Gran Paradiso National Park. Beautiful climbing up perfect granite.
  • Day 5 - A two hour hike from Refugio Pontese to Refugio Pocchiola Meneghello (2440m) takes you across a col and into Valsoera; one of the wildest and most untouched valleys in the National Park.
  • Day 6 - After a brief 40minute walk-in, your last route will be the 350m-long Monte Destrera (2596m); a striking shield of perfect gneiss. Descent back to the valley floor.

3 days - levels 2-3

We also offer an abbreviated three-day version of this trip, in which we visit Scoglio di Mroz, Triangolo del Gran Carro and Becco della Tribulazione.
